How many times have you said or heard a friend say "Ey, no need to wear helmet da, cops won't be there, let's go"?
In our country, wearing a helmet while riding two-wheelers has become a ruse to escape traffic police, and that's it. I'm sure you'll agree with me on this.
I once saw a tweet that's both amusing and thought-provoking "He rode his bike, without helmet, to the mobile store to buy a cover for his mobile phone".
Isn't it sad that we prioritize the life of an electronic device over our own?
How many of us have actually thought about helmets being an actual protective gear for us?
Until a few weeks ago, I used to be dismissive of helmets, too. Until I met with an accident that could've injured me in a bad way (if not kill me). Instead, I escaped with a wound on my right elbow, all thanks to my awesome HELMET! Yep, my helmet saved me that day.
When we take our vehicles out on the roads, we never expect any mishap to occur. Of course, we think that our riding skills are excellent and we can avoid any potential hazards. But life is unexpected. People are unexpected. An accident can happen within milliseconds and before you realize it, you're taking a 10-day vacation...at the hospital!
You might laugh and say that it doesn't make much difference, but a strong helmet can give your head so much protection and prevent major injuries. After all, your head is quite important and needs to be protected, right? Plus, riding a motorcycle makes you more vulnerable to the environment than driving a car. The risk of serious injury is much higher for a motorcyclist than a car driver.
There are different types of helmets that are available, and not all of them give the same level of protection. In India, we see people wearing a range of helmets, from strong helmets made for bikers, normal riding helmets, to cap-like helmets that offer minimal protection. When you select a helmet, instead of buying one for the sake of it, it's vital to go for one that provides proper protection for your face and skull, and is ISI standardized. Even when you go for training for two-wheelers, make sure that you as well as your pillion have a helmet on.
Riding without a helmet may make you seem cool and carefree, but your life is much more precious than that. Remember, prevention is always better than a cure.
ALWAYS wear proper, protective helmets while riding!
